Step 1 Lead in
1. Free-Talk: What is the biggest problem when you travel?
2. “Where should they go?” Ss listen to some classmates’ problems in asking directions while learning the new words of different places Then they try to give answers according to the listening materials. And have Ss identify which map is correct based on the given information.
Step 2 Listening
1. Pre-Listening: Ss brainstorm the famous places in Beijing and learn some names of the places according to the pictures.
2. Listen and Check: Ss listen to the dialogue for the first time and check where the tourist wants to go. (Wangfujing Dajie, a bookshop and the National Stadium)
3. Listen, Draw, and Mark: Ss listen to the dialogue for the second time while drawing the routes mentioned in it and marking the places the tourist wants to go on the map.
4. Consolidation: Ss use the map to help them retell how to go to the three places in the dialogue. Then Ss summarize the key structures to ask directions and the useful expressions to give directions.
Step 3 Speaking
1. Sing a Song: Ss sing a rap song about asking and giving directions.
2. Pair-Work: Ss work in pairs to ask and give directions about the pictures.
3. Role-Play: Ss work in pairs (A as a guide, B as a foreign student to our school). Make a dialogue to ask and answer directions in our school on the Open-Day. A school map and a table of school activities will be provided.
Step 4 Summary
Have Ss sum up what we have learnt in this lesson as well as think about the following question: How can we be a better “guide” when a foreign visitor asks us the way? (be polite﹨ be ready to help others﹨know more about our school, our city and our country﹨ study English hard)
