§8. Teaching process
Step 1 Warm-up
1. Lead in the topic directly.
2. Make the content clear. I will ask students to brainstorm what they can do around town. They can say “travel around town” “take friends around town”. In this way, students will know what content they will learn today.
Step 2 Forming the language systems about the topic
1. Brainstorm “what” around town. Students will work in groups to brainstorm the names of buildings around town. They will not only think of the words in this module but also use the vocabulary learned before. This builds a scaffolding for later oral and written activities.
2. Know more about their hometown. While focusing on the words about places with the help of pictures, I will ask students to think of their hometown and say some typical places to pave the way for their later tasks.
3. Find out their school. I will show them a map and ask them to find where their school is. They will use prepositions of locations to describe the location.
4. Brainstorm “where” the buildings are around town. Students will work in groups to brainstorm the prepositions of locations they have learned. This will help them to form a language system about this topic.
5. Create a map and describe the locations. I will ask one student to the front to create a map at random. With the map, students will have different ways to describe the locations of the buildings. In this way, students can practice using the prepositions of locations and develop their sense of directions.
6. Find out the way to the teacher’s home. I will show them another map and ask them to guess which the way is from my home to my school. The students will use the sentence patterns about giving directions to describe my travelling line every day.
7. Brainstorm “how”. Students will brainstorm how to ask for and give directions in their groups. This will help them to review what they have learned before and form a language system.
