In this lesson, flipped model will be used to teach reading. Students learn vocabularies and read the passage on their own before class. During the lesson, I will focus on the development of students’ applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating ability.
Teaching Focus:
Retelling (Retelling is a bit difficult for students, so retelling is one of the focus. )
Discussion on post-reading questions to develop students’ thinking disposition
Teaching Steps:
Before Class
Students learn the vocabularies on their own with the help of the audio-tape, and finish the exercises on vocabularies;
Students complete the table by scanning for specific details;
Students complete the questions on new Chinese inventions and bad inventions

Teacher provides a context of time travelling and asks students to draw their imagination of the lives before the inventions;
Teacher asks students to think about the question what inventions change our lives
Passage Reading

Teacher guides students to look at the title, the first paragraph and the three subtitles to find the main idea;
Teacher asks students to check and discuss the homework before class;
Teacher presents the table paragraph by paragraph, and students check their answers. Then, teacher asks students to do the retelling activities:
First & second time: students do the retelling with teachers;
Third time: students do the retelling on their own and record their voices and submit to the group chat
At the third retelling activities, teacher provides a scoring rubrics and students listen to each other’s recordings, and give feedback to each other.

Reading Questions

Students discuss whether the three inventions are really great, and then they share their ideas;
Teacher provides a context of time travelling and asks students to discuss what Thomas Edison will do in modern Guangzhou with the new inventions.
