教 学 过 程 及 内 容教 师 活 动学 生 活 动目 的Step 1. Introduce the concept of “Gestalt”(in Chinese “格式塔”或“完形”).

1. Present the concept and highlight the key words to let the Ss understand: to solve a problem, we have to know the relationship between the elements in a certain context.

2. Present some pictures of chimps reaching bananas to better explain the idea.

Step 2. Lead the Ss to summarize the procedure of completing a cloze test.

1. Ask the Ss to think about what to do first when doing a cloze test based on the idea above.

2. Ask the Ss to read through the passage without checking the given choices below within two minutes, after which describe the main idea in Chinese. Give some hints, like the situation and the characters if necessary.

3. Check their understanding of the passage.

4. Let the Ss complete the blanks according to their understanding of the main idea and analyses of the choices.

5. Lead the Ss to analyze the choices given below one by one to check the testing points.

6. Check the answers: give the correct answers directly and ask the Ss to analyze their mistakes.

7. Lead the Ss to do a summary on how to complete a close test successfully.

Step 3. Extension.

1. Based on the similarities between the cloze test and the text completion, ask the Ss to summarize the skills in doing this type of exercises.

2. Ask the Ss to complete the given text using the summarized procedure and skills.

3. Check the answers as a class. Draw the Ss’ attention to the points which are easily misused, and ask them to put marks on the points.

Step 4. Writing.

1. Ask the Ss to get the structures of the two passages above by summarizing the main idea of each para.

2. Ask the Ss to find the useful expressions from the passages based on the given Chinese translation. Provide some explanations if necessary.

3. Lead the Ss to employ the structures and expressions when writing a composition of the similar type.

4. Writing practice: lead the Ss to analyze the requirements or instructions and circle the key points. Ask the Ss to draw up a simple outline in their mind.

Step 5. Summary.

Ask the Ss to recall what have been learned in this class.

Step 6. Homework.

1. Consolidate the procedure and skills in doing a cloze test, in text completion.

2. Remember the useful expressions extracted from the passages.
