1. Lead-in.

Students watch a video Mary had a little lamb and the teacher talk about it with the students. Then the students have a clear idea of the three elements that are usually covered in writing about a pet: appearance, personality and lifestyle.

2. Sample reading and analyzing.

The teacher then ask the students to read the sample on the book Poppy the Cat, and match the three elements with the paragraphs.

Then the students come naturally to notice that a writing about a pet usually has a structure like the following.

3. Writing-skills.

(1) How to begin.

The teacher ask the students to read the beginning of the sample reading first. And then show them another two different ones. Through comparing, students can realize that they can attract the readers’ attention by using some riddles, some proverbs or some poems.

After the students read some samples, they work in groups and write an introduction for a pet.

(2) How to describe --- 1. Say the same thing in different ways.

First, students read quickly to get the information about Amy’s pet, Poppy the Cat.

Then, the teacher asks the students to say the same thing like age, weight and hobby in a different way.

Finally, the teacher ask the students to describe their own pet or their dream pet, covering aspects like owner, name, age, appearance and weight.

(3) How to describe --- 2. Join the sentences.

The teacher cuts out some sentences from the sample writing and shows the students how well Amy joins the sentences and gives them some chances to practice.

(3) How to describe --- 3. Writing something interesting

The teacher shows the students a video of her own pet and elicits the students to always cover something interesting in their writing while describing.

(4) How to end

After letting the students appreciate the last paragraph of the sample writing, the teacher lets the students to have a brainstorm of what they can write in the last part.
