Step 1 Lead-in & Revision

Free talk: What things can we do to help others?

Talk about Daniel and his classmates. They are the members of the Helping Hands Club. What things did they do?

Daniel did a lot for others. So what do you think of him? (kind, polite, helpful, clever, hard-working etc.)

Talk about your own abilities and your personality to your partner. And then let your partner introduce you to the other students.

Step 2 Presentation

Present the new words and phrases.

Mr Wu wrote a letter about Daniel. Why did Mr. Wu write this letter? Why did Mr. Wu recommend Daniel?

Listen to the tape and find the answers.

3. Read Mr Wu’s recommendation letter. Then fill in the blanks.

4. Read after the tape.

Analyze Mr Wu’s recommendation letter

Introduction: Paragraph 1 tells what the letter is about.

Main body: Paragraph 2 tells abilities of Daniel.

Paragraph 3 tells personality of Daniel.

Paragraph 4 tells what Daniel did.

Conclusion: Paragraph 5 tells the wish of Mr Wu and Daniel’s classmates.

Step 3 Practice

Write a recommendation letter.

Summarize the words and phases that express ability and personality.

Write a recommendation letter in groups of fours.

Check the writing to make it better.

Step 4 Production

Share the writing of the recommendation letter.

V. Homework

Recommend one of your classmates for this year’s Good Student Award. Write a recommendation letter.
