Step 2: While-reading
Since students have some ideas on fire, the teacher will lead students to the story of Lin Tao. Students read with the tape for the first time and try to answer the following questions.
When did the fire happen?
2. What did Lin Tao see when he ran out?
3. Why couldn’t Mrs. Sun run out by herself?
4. How did Lin Tao help her out?
5. For how long was Lin Tao in hospital?
By answering these questions, students will have a general idea about this story.
Then they are required to read by themselves and order the following details to make up the story.
hear someone shouting ‘Fire! Fire!’
run to Mrs. Sun’s bathroom
help her out of the fire
rush into the kitchen
see a lot of smoke from next door
be in hospital for two weeks
be at home alone
pour water over his clothes
put a wet blanket over Mrs. Sun
In this part, past tense is especially practiced.
Next, they will scan for the third time to do the T and F questions in order to fully understand the text.
Step 3: after-reading—compared reading
In this step, the teacher will remind students of another article in which a subway hero also helped others in time of great danger. Students can easily recall the story. They have to use past tense to retell the story. Then the teacher will give out a chart to compare the characters, time, location and consequences of these two stories. Through the comparison, students can have a clearer idea on how to tell a story.
Step 4: Discussion—critical thinking
After the comparison of two heroes’ stories, a critical question is put forward. Do you think they are both heroes in all ways? Students give out their own opinions from different aspects after a group discussion.
Then, the teacher will show them some pictures which include different situations. Students are asked to think about the solutions. In this way, their creative thinking is trained.
Step 5: Sharing—tell your story
In step 5, students are required to tell their own story on a time when they were brave. In this step, the teacher will lead students to an opinion—bravery does not necessarily exist only in the action of helping others but also in the challenge of improving yourself.
Step 6: homework
Homework: write an article about your reflection on helping others.
5. Reflection
