IV. Teaching procedures

Step1 Revision

T: What’s your favourite pet? Why?

Step2 Presentation (my dog)

T: What’s my favourite pet? Have a guess?

T: I like dogs best because they can do many things.

Show some pictures and present some phrases and their usage of present continuous tense in sentences:

run after a ball, hunt, hide behind a tree, do wonderful tricks, stick, fight with sb, fight for sth, bite a bone, bark, bite sb (pay attention to the spellings: running, hunting, fighting, biting, barking)

Summary: What can a dog do?

Step3 Reading

Read the poem “My dog” by the Ss themselves and answer the question: What can the writer’s dog do?

Read again and answer: What doesn’t it do?

Read once more and answer: What does the writer think of the dog?

Step4 Listening

Listen to the tape and find the beauty of the poems.

Listen again and pay attention to the following words: “all, hide, sticks, bite and friend”

Step5 Practice

Enjoy the beautiful rhymes (Words rhyme if the last syllables make the same or similar sound.) For example, “all” rhymes with “ball”. “Hide” rhymes with “wide”.

Find out the words that rhyme with “sticks”, “bite” and “friend” in the poem.

Read with the tape and enjoy the poem. (pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation)

Read again (pay attention to the stress and pause)

Match the sentences with their meanings

Step6 Production

Show time Ss read in groups

Step7 Presentation (My goldfish)

T: I like dogs best and I also like goldfish. Where do goldfish live? What can they do?

(Goldfish can bubble. The goldfish is bubbling.) Does a goldfish need a gentle touch?

Step8 Listen and tell

Listen to the tape and tell the main idea of the poem by filling some blanks.

Step9 Read and answer
