Step 1. Practice reading and retell the story
Free talk
Play the tape for students to listen and repeat, paying attention to the pronunciation and intonation, especially the simple past tense of verbs.
Ask some students to read the text paragraph by paragraph.
Step 2. Ask and answer
Say to students : Please answer the following questions as quickly as possible.
(Show the questions on the screen.)
How many people are there in the story and who are they?
(Three. They are Millie, Amy and Andy.)
Where did the two girls usually play in the park?
(Under a big tree.)
Where did they do after they heard a strange whisper?
(They turned around and asked “Is anybody there?”)
How did they feel? (They were very afraid.)
Who did they meet on their way home? (They met Andy.)
How did Andy find the cat? (He went to the park, stood beside the tree and listened carefully. When he heard the whisper, he searched the bushes.)
How did Millie and Amy feel when they learnt the ghost was a weak cat?
(They were very surprised.)
Where did they take the cat? (They took it to the animal centre.)
While students are answering the questions, the teacher write parts of answers on the blackboard. Then get students to try to retell the text with the help of the hints on the blackboard .
Step 3. Presentation
Students read the text on their own , marking the new words. The group leaders help the members solve the problems they meet. The teacher walks around the classroom to ofter some help if necessary.
Get students to complete Part B1 by themselves. Check the answers in groups.
Get students to find some useful phrases and sentences in the text. Get students to make sentences with these language points.
