Step I Lead in and revision
Show some sentences to ask some SS to review the rules on when the simple past tense should be employed.
Lead in the new class to talk about the basic sentence patterns of the simple past tense.
Step II Learning and work out the rules
Instruct SS to learn the rules on the text book by themselves to finish the mind map on the work sheet within 3 minutes.
Six SS in a group, swap the work sheets and then have a discussion to share their mind maps with others.
Ask several SS to present the rules worked out by themselves and the teacher sum up the rules on the blackboard with some corrections and guidance.
Step III Drills
Lead SS to drill the grammar items with some example sentences. Tick the rules one by one on the blackboard with the synchronization of the example sentences.
Step IV Practise and application
Instruct SS to finish the following activities with a combination with application to the simple past tense and development of English learning abilities
Activity 1.
Read the episode of a story to complete the cloze with simple past tense.
Activity 2.
Listen to a song and then experience the simple past tense in the lyric
Think about the questions after finishing the lyric.
Activity 3.
Edit a passage with ten mistakes to experience the application to the simple past tense.
Answer some questions after editing the passage.
Step V Summarize and homework
Teacher sum up the grammar item again with the help of mind maps on the blackboard
Homework to write a short passage with the proper tense.
