1.Warming up and leading-in
(1).Watch the movie trailer Marley and Me and talk about the general impressions on pet dog.
(2).Free talk:
Ask the students if they have pets .And talk about the advantages and disadvantages of keeping pets.
(3).Ask the students to look at the pictures, the title, the introduction and the sub-headings of the article. Then finish P82 Part B.
Step 2 While-reading
1. Scan the text for the second time and ask the students to pay attention to the words and phrases. Then help the students to read and grasp them.
2. Divide the students into two groups (Group A and Group B). The students in Group A are in favour of Emma’s opinions, viewpoints, supporting ideas. The Ss in Group B are in favour of Matt’s opinions.
3. Read the text for the third time.
The Ss in Group A read Emma’s opinions, viewpoints, supporting ideas. The Ss in Group B are in favour of Matt’s opinions.
4.Read what Emma says about keeping pet dogs. And ask the students what adjectives she uses to describe pet dogs. Find supporting details from the article.
5.Find what points Matt makes to against keeping a pet dog. Then match the supporting details them with his points.

Step 3 While-reading

1. According to Emma’s and Matt’s opinions to have a debate. Before debating, choose two judges to record each groups marks to encourage the students to express their opinions bravely.
