Step 1. Warm-up
Make a survey.
What can you do now?
--Can you ride a bike/ swim / fly a kite/ play football / play chess?
--Yes, I can./ No, I can’t.
Show the students’ answers on the screen.
Say the whole sentences:
Eg: ride a bike.
He / She can ride a bike.
He / She can’t ride a bike.
( Write them down on the blackboard .)
Work in pairs.
Ask your partner more questions and write down their answers, then report to the class.
Step 2. Presentation
Ask the following question:
Could you ride a bike five years ago?( Yes, I could./ No, I couldn’t.)
Get the students to do ask-answer activity.
Eg: -- Could he /she....?
-- Yes, he /she could. / No, he/ she couldn’t.
teacher the students to say the whole sentences:
He could ride a bike five years ago.
He couldn’t swim five years ago.
...
Use “ could ” to ask your partner the same questions about the past, then repeat,
Work out the rule.
