Ⅲ. Teaching steps

Step 1 Lead in

Set up situations to welcome students to the Kingdom of Numbers.

Step 2 Presentation of cardinal numbers

1. Revise the cardinal numbers that the students have learned

2. Read and try to find out the rules of the spelling of cardinal numbers 13—19;20—90;21—29.

3.Play a guessing game: Choose one student to come in front of the class and think of a number, the other students guess what the number is by asking questions like 1) Is it between thirty and fifty? (Yes/No.)

2) Is it bigger than forty? (Yes/No.)

3) Is it smaller than forty-five? (Yes/No.)

4) Is it thirty-seven? (Yes/No.)

……

4. Teach new numbers: one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, one hundred thousand, one million, ten million, one hundred million and find out the rules.

5. Learn how to say bigger numbers like 859;606;4056;6,425,200 and help the students work out the rules about how to say them.

Step 3 Practice cardinal numbers

1. Show some pictures to practice numbers.

2. Make up dialogues in pairs to talk about our everyday lives with cardinal numbers. Give the students some topics to help them:

What’s your telephone number?

What class are you in?

How old are you?

How many students are there in your class?

What’s one thousand and two thousand?

How far is it from your home to the school?

How many people are there in your family?

……

3. Play a game called “telephone” to practice how to say different numbers.

Step 4. Presentation of ordinal numbers

1. Ask and answer:

(1) ---- What day is it today?

---- It’s the __________ of April.

(2) ---- Which floor are you on now?
