Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Revision
Revise the words learned last period.
Show some pictures of different kinds of bad weather conditions and natural disasters on the screen. Ask students to tell the names one by one so as to go over these topic related words.
With the help of the pictures, students may grasp the words easily.
Step 2 Lead-in
1. Use a clip of movie as situation to tell students that an earthquake is a natural disaster that can cause great damage or loss of life.
2. Design some questions such as “What can you seen and hear?” to check students’ comprehension of the material and elicit the vocabulary study.
3. New words and phrases:
Using pictures and exercises to facilitate the vocabulary study to avoid dullness and low efficiency.
Step 3 Reading
Brief introduce the reading requirements.
Macro-reading: Ask the students to go through the text with scanning and skimming skills to work out the writing order of the story based on the contexts or topic sentences.
3. Listening and judging: Let students listen to the material and answer some easy questions.
4. Micro-reading: Divide the text study into 5 parts. Design different tasks for students to check their comprehension of each paragraph.
Step 4 Practice
Rearrangement:
To go over the general information of the text, the student will be required to work out the order of the given pictures according to the information of the story, and then they should try to say what happens in each picture.
2. Discussion:
Design picture situations for students to talk about what they would do in different situations if there was an earthquake.
