Step 1. Lead-in

1. Warming-up: In this unit, we learnt a lot about natural disasters. Can you tell me some names of natural disasters?

2. Brainstorming: I’ll show you a short video. After watching, please tell me what natural disasters you can see in it.

Step 2. Presentation

1. Away from danger: Natural disasters are really terrible, right? In our daily life, we not only have natural disasters but also accidents. Look! What kind of accidents is it? (car / traffic accident) What can we do to prevent it from happening? We should … (follow the rules / don’t walk on the railways) What’s happening? The building is on fire. Look! What’s that? (thick smoke) What should you do if you are in the building? (get out as soon as possible, towel, cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel) If you just walk past the building, what will you do then? (call 119)

2. Brainstorming: Actually, we have some more such kind of telephone numbers, what else do you know?

3. Part A1: Finish Part A1 and check the answers.

4. Listening tips: Class 1 Grade 8 students at Sunshine Middle School are attending a talk called “Away from danger”. Listen to the talk and help Simon complete his notes. Before listening, I have some tips for you. Tip 1. (Predict before listening, do it one by one) Tip 2 (Try to catch the main ideas and write part of words while listening for the first time)

5. Check the answers: Do you need to listen again? Let’s check. Put up your hands if you got all the answers correct.

6. Have a quiz: How to stay away from danger? You have 1 minute to remember the information.

7. Part A3: Simon’s cousin Annie is asking Simon about the talk. Help him answer Annie’s questions. Tip 3 (Finish some of the blanks with the help of the given information.).

8. Read in different roles: Please remember the ways to stay away from danger in 1 minute. Then we will have a test.

Step 3. Speak up

1. Listen and answer: Millie and Daniel are talking about first aid. Listen to their dialogue and fill in the table. I have the last tip for you. Tip 4 (Pay attention to the key words while listening.)

2. Pair work: Now, it’s your turn, please work in pairs to make up your own dialogue. Use Millie and Daniel’s dialogue as a model.

Step 4. Consolidation

1. Discussion: Winter holiday is coming. Teachers hope you can have a safe and happy spring festival. Please discuss in groups. Tell us what we can do to keep ourselves safe from danger? Give us as many ideas as possible.
