To make up their own stories with compound words freely and correctly.
Teaching procedures:
I. Lead-in
Have a review about the earthquake in the Reading Period.
Purposes: To get students to review what they have learnt. Meanwhile, get students to know when facing natural disasters like earthquakes, we should keep calm and try our best to be saved.
II.Presentation
Step1. Listen to a weather report about another natural disaster and answer 3 questions.
Q1: What natural disaster is it about?
Q2: Where is it from?
Q3: When will it arrive?
Purposes: To elicit compound words like snowstorm, north-east and midnight. Besides, help enhance students’ ability of listening.
Step2. Before the snowstorm
Present a DIY story by showing some pictures about what happened to Tom’s mother in order to show more compound words such as middle-aged, supermarket, toilet paper, well-prepared and became.
Purposes: To encourage students work out the rules of these compound words and understand what compound words are then help students conclude 3 written forms of compound words below.
Some compound words are formed by putting two smaller words together directly.
Some are made up of two words with a hyphen.
Some are made up of two words with a blank space.
Step3. During the snowstorm
Continue telling the story by showing some more GIFs and present some more compound words like onto, everything, snow-covered,because, therefore and become.
Purposes: To show students the main parts of speech of compound words and present Tip1. Compound words help learn and understand words better by dividing them into two shorter words.
Step4. Practice
Task 1: divide and match
Task 2: create compound words
Task 3: combine and complete (pair work)
Purposes: To help students master compound words by finishing tasks from the easier to the more advanced. And get Tip2: Compound words help remember and guess words more easily.
Step5. After the snowstorm
1. Studnets go on reading the story together and guess some more difficult compound words like grown-ups, photographs, pancakes, green hand and black tea.
Purposes: To get students learn more about compound words and tell them sometimes compound words can not be guessed directly.
2. Task 4: read and guess (pair work)
