(Because it is a garden that has been closed for ten years, few people knew it. Mary found it by accident , and she didn’t want others to know about it. So Mary called it “the secret garden.”)

Why did Mr. Craven lock the garden ?

(Because the garden belongs to Mrs. Craven, but she died from an accident , it is the garden that made Mrs. Craven die. Mr. Craven locked the door and hid the key so that nobody could find it and he wanted to forget the garden , either.)

【设计意图】学生只有了解故事的起因,才会有后面的发展和高潮,这个环节的设计可以检测学生对故事通篇内容的把握。

Step 3. Analysis

Talk about the other characters in the story.

Try to say something about their relationship.

【设计意图】鼓励学生就已知的信息进行交流,哪怕只有少数的信息量,也要鼓励学生开口,同时,也可以培养学生收集信息,归纳信息并将它表达出来的能力,学生的语言表达也得到了提升。掌握了人物之间的关系,就可以对文章的内容作更深入的探讨。

Step 4. Further reading

Discuss the great changes , including the environment and the people , especially Colin.

We can learn about the changes in three ways: the beginning, the middle and the end.

【设计意图】在整本书中,最需要探讨的就是科林的变化,这也是贯穿整个故事的一条主线,所以,了解了科林的变化过程,也就是了解了故事的发展过程,对文章又有了一个整体的把握。

Read the book on Page 58 to experience the feeling.

2. After watching a film clip , encourage students to act it out.

Choose just one question to talk about

①What do you think of Mary? If you were her, what would you do to help Colin?

②Describe what you think will happen after the story ends.

在本课的设计中,我注重的是读后指导,这就要求学生课前必须把这本书看完,理清人物关系,掌握故事的内容。整个教学过程是采用“搭脚手架”的模式来设计,从文本内容的输出到情感上的升华,环环相扣,层层递进。首先从本书的标题 The Secret Garden 引发思考: Why is it called The Secret Garden? Why did Mr. Craven lock the garden? 由此而层层深入。本书的重点是讲述两方面的变化,一是表现在环境的变化,二是表现在人物的变化,尤其是Mary 和Colin的变化。所以,课堂给了学生充足的活动时间,让他们畅所欲言,发表自己的见解。在最后设置了一个提升环节:Discuss in groups ①What do you think of Mary? If you were her, what would you do to help Colin?②Describe what you think will happen after the story ends. 学生通过合作,借助团队的力量,充分发挥想象,从最初的故事内容的提取到后来情感上的升华,层层递进,从而使学生的阅读学习也上升到一个层次。
