Step 1 Welcome to the unit
A brief introduction to the history between the Great Britain and America. Show the national flags of the UK and the USA. (on PPT 2)
Tell a joke (on PPT 3). Tell students that people speak English in both Britain and the USA , but sometimes they use different words which mean the same thing.
T: I know many boys like playing football. Do you know what it says in American English?
S: Soccer. (Write on Bb)
T: Do you know the same use of other words? Please give me some examples.
Write other right answers of the students on the Bb.
Teach the students the new words (on Page 19)
4. Finish Part A on Page 19. Teacher can give more words, such as sweets and candies. Then check the answers. Then do the strengthen exercises (on PPT 4).
5. Then finish Part B on Page 19. Check the answers. Do the strengthen exercises (on PPT 5).

Step 2 Comic strips
Read the conversation between Eddie and Hobo. Answer the question: What does Eddie think of school life?
Listen to the tape and read after it.
Point out: Why don’t you do sth? = Why not do sth?

Discussion: If there is more/ less..., Eddie will enjoy going to school.

Discussion: What’s school like in your opinion?
Step 3 Free talk about Ss’ ideal school
Free talk: what makes a good school? (good facilities, good teachers, good activities,...)
Discussion: what are good facilities/ good teachers/ good activities like?
Conclusion for this part: A good school should be of the students, by the students and for the students.
Step 4. Homework
Search online for more differences between British English and American English.
