Step 1. Introduction

Have you read Gulliver’s Travels? Do you still remember Gulliver’s experiences in Lilliput? Let’s read the following sentences.

Our ship crashed against the rocks, I swam as far as I could.

We can put them together like this. ~~ After our ship crashed against the rocks, I swam as far as I could.

When we put the word “after” here, the two ideas stick together. And the word “after” is a transition, it shows us the time.

What is a transition, do you know? A transition is a bridge between sentences or paragraphs. It helps bring ideas together. In writing, a transition can be a word, a phrase or a sentence.

Step 2. Presentation

1. When we write, we have different ways to connect the ideas in it. Can you finish the following sentences? You can choose the transitions in the box above.

1) Try to finish your work before you leave.

2) I’ll let you know as soon as I hear from her.

3) Don’t talk while you are eating.

The words “before, as soon as, while” are transitions to show time.

2. We have some other transitions to show time, please look at the form.

1) First, we had fun on Space Mountain.

2) Next, we hurried to a restaurant.

They are transitions to show sequence.

3. Some transitions are used to add more information or to give an example such as “and, also, too, again, and then, either, moreover”.

Please complete the sentences, using the proper transitions.

1) I could not understand him. I did not know what to say, either.

2) They are now in danger. For example, it is difficult for pandas to have babies.

3) I also want to travel to other countries in the future.

4. Here are some more transitions for you, please put them in the correct columns.

1) To show cause and effect, we use “ because, as, since, as a result”.

2) To emphasize, we use “never, in fact.”

3) To compare or contrast, we use “ but, otherwise, however, while, on the one hand…on the other hand.”
