四、Teaching procedures
Step 1 Leading-in
Let students listen to a story about “Gulliver in Lilliput” and then answer two easy questions.
1. What made Gulliver’s ship crash against the rocks?
2. Were the tiny men friendly to Gulliver later in the story?
Step 2 Revision and retelling
1. Ask the students to answer some questions about the story.
2. Retell the story with the useful expressions.
Step 3 Language points and further thinking
1. Show students some useful language points with pictures and encourage students to learn them well, e.g. be tied to…; tie… to…; manage to do sth..
2. Ask students to think about some more questions to help them have a deep understanding of the text.
e.g. (1) Why did the tiny men tie Gulliver to the ground?
(2) What did the tiny men think of Gulliver’s face?
(3) How did the tiny men feel when climbing over Gulliver?
(4) How did the tiny men feel when Gulliver shouted at them?
(5) What do you think of the small men?
(6) What did one of the tiny men say to Gulliver?
(7) Why did the tiny men shout?
Step 4 Extended activity
1. Let students watch a short movie clip and answer several questions.
e.g. (1) Did Gulliver manage to run away?
(2) Are the other tiny men interested in Gulliver?
(3) Do they want to know more about Gulliver?
2. Guide students to rewrite the story in the eye of the tiny men.
3. Invite several students to tell their stories.
Step 5 Homework
1. Continue reading Gulliver’s Travels or watch the film if you are interested in it.
2. Keep on practising reading the story after class.
