Pre-reading
Talk about the question: How to be a polite person in public?
Show some pictures and present some new words and phrases about manners.
The related questions:
How to greet others? (say “hello” or “nice to meet you” shake one’s hand hug each other)
How to start a conversation? (talk about weather, books, families, classmates, holidays…… avoid weight, bad news, money, death……)
Create the following situations:
During the weekends and holidays, lots of people go to parks. What should we do? (New words and phrases: queue, push in before others, bump into someone, in one’s way, excuse me, push past, shout or laugh loudly, keep one’s voice down.)
Conclusion: In all, good manners mean the polite behaviors in different situations.
Show some pictures and ask Ss to describe these behaviors. (Explanation: Are they all right? Which of them needs to be corrected? )
Conclusion: Please choose the right things to do in public?
Present some polite words.
Talk about how to behave when we travel abroad. (learn their manners.)
Then enter the reading part: When in Rome.
Ask students to look through the text and find out the meanings of the new words.
While-reading
Listen to the tape and find out which country it talks about.(The UK.)
Try to find out all the questions in the interview then have a check.
Divide the text into small parts. (Point out which line talks about the questions one by one.)
Have a look: How many topics are there in the dialogue? (Ask Ss to read the text carefully and get the main idea of each topic.)
Pay attention to the details and finish some tasks at the same time.
