Step 1: Lead-in
Amy and her cousin Shirley go to the library. They are discussing what they should and should not do in the library.
Show some pictures to the students. They can find out the answers from these pictures: We should keep quiet. We should keep the library clean. We shouldn’t eat there. We shouldn’t write in the books and should put them back after reading.
So we should behave politely in public places.
Step 2: Presentation
But if someone doesn’t behave politely in public places, we can show them some pictures. These pictures are called ‘Public Signs’. They help explain things. Most are with a red line across them. They keep us from danger or warn us not to do something.
Show them two public signs with red lines across them, ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Littering’.
Step 3: Listening
A1: Amy and her cousin Shirley are also talking about the signs in public. Listen to their conversation and help Shirley complete her notes. Before listening, guess the missing word. While listening, try to catch the missing words. After listening, check their answers carefully.
Underline the phrases and read them together.
Check their understanding about public signs: Where are the public signs used? What do they look like? What are they used for?
Show them eight public signs and ask them to match them with their usage.
A2: Let’s learn more about two public signs which can warn us not to do something: ‘No photos’ and ‘No Smoking’. What do they mean? Where can we see them?
Amy and her cousin Shirley are also talking about four public signs with red lines across them. Let’s listen to their conversation and find out where we can see them. Pay attention to write down the key words to save time.
