特殊奥林匹克运动会（Special Olympics），简称特奥会，是专门为智能低下，言语不清的神经和精神障碍患者甚至是生活不能自理的儿童举办的国际性运动竞赛活动。
特殊奥林匹克运动（简称特奥运动），是基于奥林匹克精神，专门针对智障人士开展的国际性运动训练和比赛。特奥运动项目非 常丰富，从最基本的机能活动到最高级的竞赛，适合所有年龄 和能力等级的特奥运动员。特殊奥林匹克 运动会（简称特殊奥运会或特奥会）包括本地、国家、洲际和世界等不同级别。其中，世界特殊奥运会每两年举办一 届，夏季和冬季交替举行。国际特奥会共举办过11 届夏季特殊奥运会、8届冬季特殊奥运会。2007年上海承办第十二届世界夏季特殊奥运会。
国际特殊奥林匹克委员会（简称国际特奥会或 特奥会）是特奥运动的国际权威组织及管理机构，也是国际奥 委会认可的可以在全球范围内使用“奥林匹克”名称独立开展体育活动的组织，多年来一 直致力于在世界范 围内推动特奥运 动的发展。 国际特奥会的创始人是美国前总统约翰·肯尼迪的妹妹尤尼斯·肯尼迪·施莱佛（Eunice Kennedy Shriver）女士，现为该组织的名誉主席；现任主席是蒂姆·施莱佛（Timothy Shriver）先生。 国际特奥会总部设在美国华盛顿特区，现有会员组织160多个，特奥运动员225万人。
通过参加特奥运动，智障人可以增强身体机制，动作技能，自尊，自信，培养友谊以及得到家庭成员的支持。 特奥运动员将这些益处带入他们的日常生活、工作、学习和社区活动中。家庭成员可以变得更加亲密，社区志愿者可以和运动员成为好朋友，每个人都可以看到智障人的价值。
特殊奥林匹克运动会的口号是：“勇敢尝试，争取胜利！”（Let me win But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.） 让我获胜，如果我不能获胜，让我勇敢地去尝试。
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Lead-in
1. Ts have a free talk with students to have a brief self-introduction.
2. Ts Present a video to introduce some background information about the Special Olympics.
Step 2: Fast Reading
1. Ss read report quickly and Underline the sentences with place, time and people’s names.

Step 3: Careful Reading
1. Read paragraphs one by one and finish related exercises .
