Teaching steps:

Step 1. Leading-in

1. Show a piece of the award music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Ask: What do you think of the music?

Do you like it or not? Why or why not?

2. T: Each time a medal was presented to a winner at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the award music was played. Do you know who wrote the music? The music was written by Tan Dun, a world-famous composer.

Step 2. Presentation

1. T: Read paragraph 1 and 2 and try to complete the following table to know the general information about Tan Dun.

Step 3. While-reading

1. T: As a composer, perhaps he is best known for winning an Oscar for his music in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Let’s enjoy part of his music in the film.

2. Free talk: Do you like the music? Why or why not?

3. Group work: T: Work in groups of four. Try to talk about the feelings when listening to the music. And try to imagine the scenes in your mind, including when, where, who and what?

Show a sample to help the students.

Encourage the students to talk about their ideas.

4. Enjoy the film with the music Night fight.

Encourage the students to talk about their thoughts about whether they like the way the film and music get together and try to tell reasons.

6. Feel the use of the phrases the rushing water, the blowing wind, the … stone, the … paper.

Encourage the students to show their own ideas about the adjectives to describe the common objects.

7. Try to make the students’ own sentences more lively.
