Teaching Procedures

Step1. Warm-up

What kind of TV programs or films do you often watch? …

Why do you like them? …

(Encourage the students to give as many answers as possible.)

Do you like reading detective stories? Why?

Step2. Presentation

1. Show on a picture of Sherlock Holmes:

Do you know the man in the picture? Who is he?

2. Introduce: He is a very famous detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

3. Ask: How does a detective deal with many cases?

4. Show on a flow chat, teach new words:

victim murder murderer crime suspect detective wanted

5. Practice: fill in the blanks with the new words.

Step3. Welcome to the unit

1. Lead-in: If you are the detective, what questions will you ask these four suspects?

2. According to the detective’s notes on the four suspects, fill in the table.

Step4. Discussion

Work in groups, ask the students to discuss who is most likely to be the murderer and the reason. Then draw a picture of the person they think committed the crime in Part B.

Step5. Playing a game

1. Listen to the tape, then answer some questions

2. Read and act the dialogue out in pairs
