3. Brainstorm: encourage students to talk freely about the Chinese things they know.
Activity two Welcome to the unit
Step 1 Chinese things
1. Show some pictures to introduce more traditional Chinese things to the students.
2. Ask students to complete Part A on Page 7.
T: Millie is also showing the exchange students some pictures of Chinese things. Help her write the correct name under each picture.
3. Read the names of the Chinese things and learn some new words.
4. Lead student to learn more about the Chinese things, especially dragon dance, Chinese knot and Chinese paper-cutting.
Step 2 Chinese places
1. Lead-in
T: After learning so much about traditional Chinese things, the exchanges students want to know more about Chinese places in order to make their travel plan.
2. Group work
Ask students to have a discussion about what places they want to advise the exchange students to visit in China and why.
3. Listen and answer
T: Kevin, a British exchange student, is asking Millie for suggestions on his travel plan. Listen to their conversation in Part B and try to get useful information to answer the following questions.
(1) Which city does Millie advise Kevin to visit first?
(2) What wonderful places can Kevin go?
(3) What special things can Kevin see?
4. Ask students to practice the conversation between Kevin and Millie in different ways.
Step 3 Expansion
1. Ask students to guess which place the teacher want to suggest to the exchange students and try to tell the reasons.
2. Present some pictures of our hometown, Rugao and lead students to know more about some special things, places and food in Rugao.
3. Pair work
Ask students to make a new conversation in pairs to invite the exchange students to Rugao.
Activity three Comic strip
Step 1 Lead-in
Present two pictures of Eddie and Hobo and ask students to guess where they are.
T: Eddie and Hobo are on the Great Wall. We know there is an old saying in China——“He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” Maybe they want to be true men.
Step 2 Listen and answer
Ask students to listen to the dialogue between Eddie and Hobo, try to know what is happening to them and then answer the questions below.
