Teaching steps

Step 1 Lead-in

I. Show pictures and information about China’s astronaut Yang Liwei and lead in new words:

China’s excellent astronaut , he was born in Liaoning. In 1983, he served as a pilot.In 1987, he got pilot’s licence and became a pilot. In 1998, he took part in China’s space training, and five years later ,he was chosen to be an astronaut. In 2003, “the Shenzhou V” spacecraft that Yang Liwei took by took off. He is the pride of China.

II. Introduce Neil Armstrong with pictures and some new words.

T: This article is a about Neil Armstrong. Go through it quickly and answer some questions.

2. Scanning and Work out a timeline for Neil Armstrong [

T: Read the article again and work out a timeline for Neil Armstrong. It’s not necessary for you to read each paragraph carefully. You can read the first sentence of each paragraph to get the main idea.

T: In 1966, Neil Armstrong and David Scott went into space by spacecraft Gemini 8. Read paragraph 3, and answer the following questions.

(1) What did they do during their trip into space?

(2) What unexpected thing happened on their way back?

(3) How did they deal with the problem?

(4) To solve the problem successfully, what qualities do you think Neil Armstrong should have?
