Teaching procedure:
Step 1: Leading in
Have a free talk about the solar system.
The teacher gives a very brief introduction to the solar system to arouse the students’ interest in today’s topic. “The sun and everything circles around it is known as the solar system. Our planet is a very important one in it.” Meanwhile, the teacher shows a picture of the solar system and asks two questions about it.
Qs:
Can you guess how old the solar system is? (4.6 million years old)
How many known planets are there in it? And what are they?
(8. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.)
Some students may ask why there are 8 planets but not 9.
(Pluto is excluded from the list and reclassified as a dwarf planet.)
Step 2: Warming up
Play a guessing game called “Let’s compare!”
The teacher asks the students to compare Earth and Mars. Many of them don’t know the differences between these two planets. Through this game, the students will have a better understanding of what Mars is like. Moreover, playing a game makes it fun to learn.
Here are five statements. Please tell whether they are true or not.
Earth is bigger.
Earth is heavier.
Mars is warmer.
Humans jump higher on Mars.
There is breathable air on Mars.
The students give different answers and they can’t wait to know the results out of curiosity. The teacher explains to them.
√ Mars is only one half of the size of Earth.
√ Earth is 10 times as heavy as Mars.
× It is ridiculously cold and freezing in most places on Mars.
√ Humans experience less gravity on Mars.
× The atmosphere on Mars is mainly carbon dioxide, which is quite dusty.
After this, the teacher tells 3 fun facts about Mars to attract more attention.
■Mars takes its name from the Roman god of war because of its blood-red color.
■Mars is home to the tallest mountain in the solar system.
■Days on Mars are 40 minutes longer. Its length of year is 687 days.
Step 3: Learning words and expressions
