These students are graduating from high school after no more than two months. They have chosen to take arts as their major and they have spent more than two years to learn arts which cost them much time before taking the National Entrance Examination. So they hope the teacher speaks a bit slower in class for them to follow.

Teaching aims of the lesson: After learning the lesson, the students will be able to

(on knowledge and skill ) understand the passage and to tell facts from opinions and to write a short essay commenting on a job using the structure of the article:

raising a question→ analyzing the question→ solving the question.

( on feeling and attitude ) learn to analyze what others say or write rather than accept what they get and to identify the advantage and disadvantage of a job, such as popular jobs, unusual jobs or everyday jobs.

(on moral ) whatever jobs he/she takes, we should respect him/her and each labor.

Learning difficulties:

the background knowledge about some unusual jobs

to analyze the structure of the text

to write a comment on a specific job in English

Learning approaches:

to scan the text to find out the main idea of each paragraph, trying to get the structure of the text with the help of the team

imitating the methods of writing by writing a comment

to learn to think critically while reading and writing

Learning emphasis

learning to identify what is fact and what is opinion

learning to view one’s own idea considering all aspects of the thing.

learning to write a short passage in the structure: raising a question→ analyzing the question→ solving the question

Teaching procedures

Brainstorm

Draw an oval with the word of job in the center on the blackboard and ask what they will think of, encouraging the students to say as more as possible. Write down what they say outside the oval.

T: Hi, everybody! We are going to take up different jobs in the near future. Have you ever think it over? Today let’s talk about jobs. Would you please tell us what your ideal jobs are and your reasons?

S1: I like painting. I want to be a designer of fashionable clothes.

S2: I’m fond of music, and I may be a singer. A pop singer is welcome.
