This lesson is the first period of Unit 4 in New Senior English for China Students’ Book 3. With the help of this passage, students will have a better understanding of the topic “Humankind and Nature”. This lesson contains three parts: Warming Up, Pre-reading and Reading. The passage is a brief introduction on how the universe developed and the development of life on the earth. It provides a scientific background to any investigation into space. This lesson will develop students’ Core Competencies well, which aims at improving their language ability, learning ability, thinking quality and cultural character.
II. The analysis of students
There are 56 students in class 8, Grade 1. 41 students are from countryside. The rest are from the county. Some of them are weak in learning English. Students are curious about the development of the earth and life. But it’s a bit hard for them to understand the passage. In this lesson, I will guide students to finish several tasks, which can help them have a better understanding of this passage. At the same time, I will try my best to activate students’ interest in learning about this topic.
III. Teaching goals
1.Language goals:
(1)Students can read and understand the following words: astronomy, system, religion, theory, atom, billion, globe, violent, carbon, dioxide, atmosphere, unlike, fundamental, harmful, acid, chain, multiply, oxygen, exist, thus, puzzle.
(2)Students can understand and use the following key expressions: in time, lay eggs, give birth to, in one’s turn, prevent...from, be fundamental to.
2.Ability goals:
(1)Students can read the dialogue and understand its meaning by finishing 3 reading tasks.
(2)Students can retell the development of earth and life according to pictures.
3.Moral goals:
(1)Students can have more interest in learning about astronomy: the science of stars.
(2)Students can realize the importance of protecting the earth and take some actions to solve the problem.
IV. Teaching important points
1. Guide students to understand the dialogue by finishing 4 reading tasks.
2. Guide students to find out and understand key words and expressions in the passage.

1. Guide students to retell the development of earth and life.
2. Guide students to talk about the ways of protecting the earth.
