Analysis of the teaching Material

This is the second part of section A of Book 3, whose main aim is to develop students’ positive attitudes towards life. In Unit 2-Reading part, the students have learned we should keep a positive attitude towards life no matter what happened and some words and expressions related to the topics, so their confidence in life has been aroused in a degree, upon which this lesson is based. In this part, the lesson mainly deals with deepening student’s understanding of failure and enlarging the vocabulary concerning the topic. The formation of the right failure value will help students live and study better, which set a base for their later study about how to face failure in challenging yourself 1.

Analysis of the students

The teaching objects are fresh students of senior high school, whose English foundation is weak. For example, they are lacking in vocabulary. Besides, their capability of language application is in badly need of improving. What’s more, a majority of them lack interest in learning English. Therefore, to arouse their interest, I mean to use some pictures to lead in and use such activity as interviewing in teaching. Moreover, I’ll use such activity as retelling so as to help them better master and apply what they learn.

Teaching objectives:

Students can strengthen four reading skills: predict the main idea according to the picture, skimming (skim to get the text type), scanning (locate according to the time) and word guessing (according to the context).

Students are able to retell what happened to the girl in different times with the help of key words.

Through interviewing their classmates about how they face failure and communicating about how to face failure, they can form a right value of facing failure.
