Link words？but however Although While
连词是虚词中的一种，它不能在句子里独立地担任句子成分，而只能起 连接作用，连接词与词，短语与短语，句子与句子 。
Step 2 Look at the link words “but” and “however” in these sentences, and answer the following questions:(P14)
(1) The report shows that we’re making progress but that we need to make greater efforts.
(2) In the last ten years in China, 150 million people moved out of poverty. However, the challenges are still great.
(3) More than 1 billion people in developing countries do not drink safe water. However, in other parts of the world, e.g. Eastern Europe, water is now mostly safe to drink

but “但是”
用作连词，表示转折，用来引出相反意见或不同情况，语气最强。可以连接两个并列分句，两个并列成分，或者后接状语。常用在口语中，不能与though / although同时出现在一个句子中。
However “然而、不过”
它的语气比but弱，可放在句首，句中或句末，通常用逗号与句子其它成分隔开。
