Type of period:
Comprehensive Reading
Teaching aims:
1. Improve the students’ comprehensive ability of reading.
2.Enable the students to understand some new word appearing in the text.
3.Train the students’ thinking in terms of Brainstorm and discussion.
4.Enable the students to be aware the violence of nature and take action right now.
5.Help the students form the positive attitudes and values when facing disasters.
Teaching procedure:
Ⅰ. Pre-reading
Step 1 Lead-in
Introduce the topic in terms of displaying two short pieces of video. One is about gentle breeze in Spring and the other is about the Tornado. After watching the strong contrast videos, the students are supposed to answer the teacher’s questions displayed on the PPT individually.
Step2 Brainstorm
The students are supposed to take out a piece of paper to write down whatever they think out when they see the word-disasters. Then they will share their answers with their classmates.
Step 3 Vocabulary learning
The students are supposed to explain the words appearing on the PPT in English or with examples.
Ⅱ.While-reading
Step 1 Scanning & Skimming
The students are supposed to find the answers to the three questions printed on the PPT. They should find the answers by themselves first and then they could check the answers in pairs if necessary.
Q 1: What is a tornade?
Q 2: What is a hurricane and where does it usually occur?
Q 3: What is the story about in “An Extraordinary Event”?
Step 2 Detailed reading –Jigsaw Reading
