Reading and Writing

Ⅱ Teaching content analysis:

The teaching content of this class belongs to the 3rd module in book 2. The topic of this module is Music, which aims to let students know different types of music, the names of some common musical instruments and some well-known composers. The type of the discourse is biography, introducing the legendary life experiences of three great western classical music composers. The function of learning this module is to enable the students to know how to write a biography about famous musicians.

As far as I am concerned, the discourse which can be chosen as a text in the textbook must have some advantages over some other learning materials. The discourse in this module belongs to biography, which is aimed at introducing three famous western classical music composers. By observing the paragraphs it’s not difficult to find that the structures which are used to introduce them are the same. At first, the author introduces their personal information and then talks about their life experience. Based on this, I decide to combine reading, discourse analysing and writing together. During the class, I will help the students find the structure of a biography and then practise writing a biography.

Ⅲ Students:

This class is designed for the students in senior grade one. Considering that they have only been studying in high school for three months, their vocabulary is limited, so I will ask them to preview some related words and expressions before the class. In order to lower the level of difficulties, I divide the text into three parts, and go deeper step by step. After each part, I will lead the students to summarize the important aspects and structure of a biography so that they can know how to do the final task. Besides, I will also design some games to increse their interest in this class. Futhermore, I will ask them to work with their group members and compete with other groups so that they can develop their cooperative learning ability and increase their enthusiam for participation.

Ⅳ Teaching aims:

I hope after having this class, the students can:

1. know more about three great western composers and how to write a biography;

2. improve their cooperative learning ability with their group members;

3. learn something from their spirit.

The following are the details of my teaching aims in English Core Competence.

(1). Language skill

a). Students can learn some new words and expressions in this passage;

b). Students can improve their reading skills;

c). Students can learn how to write a biography and practise writing it, thus improving their writing ability.

(2). Learning ability

a). Students can preview the new words before class and develop their habit of previewing;

b). Students can discuss with their classmates and finish the tasks together so that they can improve their cooperative learning ability;

c). Students can broaden their ways of learning by sharing their opinions and learning from each other.

(3). Thinking quality

a). Students can improve their logic thinking and inductive ability through thinking of the questions asked by the teacher and summarizing the structure of a biography;

b). Students can improve their creative thinking by trying to write a good biography;

c). Students can build their spirit by learning the experience of Beethoven.
