To enable the students to understand the whole passage and learn about the three great philosophers in ancient China.
To guide the students to learn some useful reading skills and strategies.
To arouse the students’ interest in Confucianism and the awareness to learn from it.
Teaching steps
Step1. Lead-in
Show students a micro-lesson about the introduction of Confucius. And the key words will also be showed in the micro lesson. This will arouse their interest in the three great teachers and lay foundation for the further reading.
Step2. Pre-reading (Vocabulary)
Have students read and review the key words showing in the micro-lesson.
2.Finish Activity1 on page41 to get a basic knowledge of the three great people in ancient China and consolidate the key words.
Step3. While reading
Fast reading
Read the passage quickly (skimming and scanning) and then finish the three charts to get some basic information about the three philosophers.
Careful reading
Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question.
Step4. Post reading
Retell the passage according to key words
Discussion
As students, what should we learn from Confucianism?
Step5. Homework
Write a short passage about what you have learned from Confucianism and what you should do to become a good student.
教学反思:本堂课主要是介绍中国古代三位伟大的思想家,学生对这个话题并不陌生。然而学生对孔子,孟子,墨子看似了解,其实对他们的生平和思想是不太清楚的,而且话题本身比较枯燥,很容易让学生觉得很无聊。因此在进入阅读之前,我就用微课视频对孔子进行简要的介绍,他的生平经历、学说、他对中国和外国人民的重大影响以及孔子学院的情况,一方面让学生更加了解孔子,另一方面引起学生对古代思想家的兴趣,与此同时在微课视频中介绍了本堂课需要掌握的单词,为学生扫除阅读障碍。
在post-reading部分,我设计了一个retelling的活动,给出的关键词大部分都是本堂课需要掌握的词汇,一方面是为了让学生进一步掌握词汇和熟悉文章内容,另一方面也是为了让学生开口说英语,这个活动对于一些同学来说有点难,但是我的目的是让学生能开口说英语,哪怕不能用到所有的关键词也无所谓。
在本节课的最后一个环节,引导学生去了解儒家思想的核心,仁义礼智信,让学生自己进行讨论和反思,作为学生,我们可以从三个思想家和儒家文化中学到什么,怎样才能成为一个好学生,如果学生能自己总结出我们应该怎么做,那么本堂课的情感态度目标也就得以实现,最后通过校园中关于孔子和儒家核心思想图片的展示,让学生知道孔子和儒家文化就在我们的身边。
