Confucius is the philosopher whose influence has been the greatest.

2 Ability goals

1. Be able to have a basic knowledge of ancient philosophers, their teachings and new words, phrases.

2. Be able to express their ideas

3. Be able to know the essential steps in reading, which are fast reading, scanning and details reading.

Teaching Procedures & Duration

Step I Lead-in

Activity 1 Explanation (2 Min)

(As a one of the lead-in task, the teacher will ask the students one question. The students are supposed to think over the meaning of a proverb, which will arouse their critical thinking and learning motivations)

Activity 2 Former Knowledge Recalling( 3 Min)

The teacher will Show pictures of Confucius, Mencius and Mozi and some teachings(English versions) of them on the screen. And the students are going to find out the Chinese versions of these teachings.

(Here are three portraits of the best-known philosophers in ancient Chinese. Do you know who they are. They are the best-known philosophers in ancient China. So do you want to know more about them.)

Step II Preparation for Reading (2 Min)

(This reading passage is about the three great philosophers. First have a look at the words in Activity1. Let the students read after the teacher and then match the definition of each word.)

(Now, please turn to page 42. Let’s first look at the words. Please read after me. Now, let’s check the meaning of each word or phrase.)

Step II Fast –reading (4 Min)

(Read the text quickly to get the main idea of this passage. The fast reading should be finished within 3 minutes and the answering checking should be finished in 1 minute.)

(Alright,please turn to page 43 and look at the passage. Now, you are going to read this passage as quickly as you can and find out the main idea of this passage. Go ahead.)

Step III Scanning & Reading for Overall Details( 6Min)

(At this time, the teacher will read this passage to the students and the students should find out the overall details when they are listening.) After this, they are going to finish the multiple choices questions in Activity 3.

(OK, now, I will read this passage to you. You should listen carefully and find out the general details of this passage and finish the multiple choice questions in activity 3. let’s check the answers. The first one, the Chinese people followed Confucius’s teachings for over 2000 years. The second one, Mencius believed that people are more important than rulers. The third one, Mohism began by Mozi. The year 476BC is when Mozi was born. The fourth one, Mozi did not agree with war. The fifth one, Mencius had important government positions, but Mozi did not. OK, there are two more questions.

Step IV Detailed Reading and Group Work(5+2+8=15 Min)

(This time, the students are going to read this passage by themselves. And they should underline the important information of each philosopher this passage is talking about, such as the date of birth and death,the core of their teachings and the influences of their teaching if ever mentioned in this passage. After the reading, they are supposed to finish 2 tasks. The first one is T/F questions and the second one is Gap-filling task. The students will be given 3-4 minutes to discuss with their partners.
