Step I lead-in
Show pictures about the gorges and dam to introduce the topic of the three gorges dam. Purpose: to introduce the new words and the topic.
Step II Pre-reading
Students are supposed to answer the question: what do you know about the three gorges dam?
(when the students answer the quetions, I will write down some new words on the black board. Such as: canal, dam, gorge, hydro-electric, reservoir, cultural relics, generate, harness, submerge, and remove.)
Students are supposed to answer the question: if you are supposed to introduce the three gorges dam to a foreigner, what aspects about it will be included?
(According to the answers of the students, I will draw a brief structure of the introduction discourse, as following:)
Purpose: to arouse the interest into the topic and to get the students familiar with these words, thus to help them understand the reading passage.
