Step1: Greetings and lead-in

(1) Lead in by talking about traffic signs. Show some traffic signs and let students guess the meaning using imperatives. Familiar topics like traffic signs can always arouse students’ interest.

(2) Learning aims:

To understand the use of imperatives

To practice using the imperatives properly

(3) What are imperative sentences? Give the definition.

We usually use imperatives to express our willingness, requests, orders, suggestions, warnings and so on.

Step2: Presentation

Ask the students to read the imperative sentences from the text book and try to summarize the affirmative forms and negative forms.

Be patient.

Switch off the motor.

Let’s turn on the radio.

Follow the rules of the road.

Don’t go faster than 90 kph.

No parking.

Invite one representative to explain the affirmative form.

“Be” type: Be + n./adj.

“Do” type: Do + …

“Let” type: Let sb do sth Invite another student to explain the negative form.

“Be & Do” type: Don’t be / do sth.

“Let” type: Let sb. not do sth. / Don’t let sb. do sth.

“No” type: No + n./v-ing

Practice: Give advice to a girl who is badly ill using imperatives.

Eg. Have a good rest.

Go to see the doctor…
