Maud Gonne: an English-born Irish revolutionary, feminist and
actress.
Ask the students to share more information about the poem and poet they found on the Internet
Step Ⅱ. Poem appreciation
Listen to the poem and enjoy the beauty of it
Ask several students to read the poem with emotion so that the students can have more time and opportunities to get exposed to the poem and have a better insight into the poem.
Lead the students to summarize the end rhyme of the poem:
abbacddceffc
Step Ⅲ. Better understanding of the poem
Divide the whole class into different groups and then have a
discussion about the understanding of the poem.
Invite different groups to explain the poem sentence by sentence.
Invite different groups to express what the author wants to convey. (Express the love to Maud Gonne, Yeats claimed that he can stand the test of time, and he will be the only one loving her even if she is old and gray and full of sleep. I prefer to see this poem as a memoir rather than a love song. It seems to talk to itself: to be a time traveler, to love you when you are old.)
Step Ⅳ: Techniques of expression and emotion
Ask different groups to have a discussion about techniques of expression and emotion and then share their “Fruits of efforts”
??Imagination
A picture which seemed to be old and clumsy
Meanwhile, the picture is warm and fragrant
??Contrast
Contrast between an attractive young girl and an old lady
Contrast between other people’s love and his
Contrast between reality and imagination
??Emphasis
The repetition of fire
Fire is so warm, but the poet felt despair for his love.
