Step 1: Lead-in
1. Show the students some posters of several films, asking them to look carefully and come up with the names of the films and further information.
The films are: Painted Skin, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Porter and The Hobbits.
2. Question: what do these films have in common?
According to this question, the teacher leads the students to come up with the definition of Fantasy Literature—Stories that take place in a magical and impossible world.
3. Introduce British writer Phillip Pullman and his famous writing—His Dark Materials. The reading passage “The Cat That Vanished” comes from the second work of the trilogy.
Step 2: While-reading
Scanning:
1. Read the reading passage and try to get the main idea of the story and its main characters.
2. Divide the whole passage into four parts and match them with he main ideas after reading.
