The students have done some research into the author and have shared their book reviews. So they have got a general idea of the author and the age he lived in. That’s why two representatives are selected to do presentations at the beginning of the class. Also students in this School have a relatively poor proficiency of English, so basic-level activities, e.g. learning key words and expressions, answering questions and appreciation of language in literary works and are available for them. before class, reading assignments are expected to be finished quite well, which is the important basis of the tasks designed for this period.

Teaching Aims:

1. To appreciate and analyze English novels

2. To skim and summarize the text during reading

3. To develop critical thinking ability, keep optimistic attitude to life and foster a sense of responsibility

Teaching Important Points:

1. To understand the text better with the help of relevant background information

2. To enjoy the charm of language employed in certain scenes

e.g. The bowls never needed washing, ...; ...staring at the pot with eager eyes

...those next to Oliver nudged him; held onto the pot for support; in great

excitement; show complete astonishment.

3. To share feelings about the significance of literature through some examples

Teaching Difficult Points:

1. To understand the theme better.

2. To be willing to explore literary works more deeply .

Teaching Methods:

Suggest the use of the Internet for background information and movies for a general idea of the whole story.

Encourage the making of PPT to share relevant information.

Advise necessary group work to settle difficult points.
