How to understand the text better.
How to act out the dialogue vividly.
Step I. Revision and lead-in
Review what we learned about Charles Dickens. We know he is one of England’s most famous novelists. Ask students to name some of the masterpieces of Charles Dickens. Then tell them that we will learn a part of the novel,Oliver Twist.
Step II. Prediction :
Show two pictures from Oliver Twist, and ask students to predict:
What did Oliver ask for?
Why did he ask for more?
Did he get more?
Step III. Scanning:
Ask students to scan the text to check if their prediction is correct and then find out the main idea of the story.
(Do Activity 1 on page 30)
a) The boys in the workhouse decided that they need more food. Oliver Twist said that he would ask the warden for more to eat. The workhouse managers decided that Oliver must be hanged.
b) The boys in the workhouse were starving and chose Oliver
Twist to ask for more food. When Oliver did this, the workhouse managers were very angry and locked Oliver in a room.
c) The boys in the workhouse chose Oliver Twist to ask for more food. When he did this, the workhouse managers were very angry and sent Oliver out to work.

Step IV. While-reading
Ask students to read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:
Why did the boys choose one boy to ask for more soup?
(Firstly, each boy was allowed one bowl of soup and no more.
Secondly, they slowly starved for three months.
