Dear Andy,

I’m glad to hear that you want to know more about the Dai ethnic group. Let me give you a general introduction to the Dai.

The Dai ethnic group has a population of 1.2 million, most of whom live in the southern area of Yunnan. The Dai have their own dialect and script, and the reason why they are called the Dai is that “Dai” means freedom and human beings in the language. They have an agricultural economy, their staple food being rice, beans and beef.

What is known to all is that the Dai people are good at singing and dancing, and they are especially known for the Peacock dance. The Water-splash Festival is an annual grand festival held in April. They think they can wash away the dust and avoid disasters by splashing water on each other.
