Dear John,
I’m glad to know that you have an interest in Chinese culture. Located in central Shanxi province, the Ancient City of Pingyao is a famous cultural town with a history of over 2, 700 years. As a well-preserved town representing Ming and Qing dynasties, the whole town was named as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997, including its city walls, downtown streets, dwellings, temples and so on. It is of vital importance to the analysis of the development of Chinese politics, economy, culture, art and religion.
Keeping the typical pattern of Ming and Qing dynasties, it has four main streets, eight side streets and 72 lanes. Overlooking this old town from the sky, you may find the shape of it is like that of a tortoise.
Only by visiting the Ancient City of Pingyao yourself can you enjoy the beautiful scenery. May you have a great trip.
