Book7 Module3 Literature ---Reading and Vocabulary(2)

The Analysis of the Teaching/Reading Material

The reading material is from Module 3---Literature. It is a general description of Charles Dickens’s representative work, Great Expectations. The story is about a young man who helps a starving convict. Because of his kindness, he is repaid and has a chance to change his destiny. And in the end, he also marries the girl he loves deeply for many years. In a word, the story is inspiring and can help the students to gain some insights in their own life.

Teaching Aims

1.Knowledge goals:

⑴Enable students to use the new words and phrases learnt from reading in their writing.

⑵Enable students to know something about Charles Dickens, his representative works and the background information of his writing in the 19th century.

2.Ability goals:

⑴Enable students to locate the key information quickly through skimming.

⑵Enable students to write an account of one’s own life experiences in a clear and logical way.

3.Moral goals:

After reading Pip and Estella’s story and writing their life experiences in the first person, students can understand that the true meaning of love is not about money and know that we should always be a kind and helpful person.

The Analysis of the Students

The students are from senior high grade two. After one and a half years’ English writing training in high school, they have mastered the basic skill to write. But they don't have much experience in writing someone’s life experience in the first person. Besides, they still have trouble when it comes to analyzing the characters’ personalities and expressing their own opinions accurately.
