Purpose: To arouse the interest of the students and lead into the topic today: Antarctica: the last continent
Step 2: Scanning
I will give the students two minutes to look through the whole passage and summarize the main idea of each para:
Purpose:To develop their ability of summary and focus on the important words
Step 3: Skimming
Paragraph 1 is the brief introduction of Antarctica, so I will ask the students to have a skimming in order to find out the detail about the climate, size, geography and water of Antarctica. At last they can make a conclusion: Antarctica is the most inhospitable place and then we can go on the next paragraphs.
So I design five questions for Paragraph 2,3,4&5to practice the skill of skimming in order to improve the ability of reading in the examination.
What kinds of plants and animals can you find in Antarctica?
Purpose: Let the students learn to summarize
Why is Antarctica an important place?
Purpose: Practice the ability of analyze
What does the title mean “Antarctica: the last continent”?
Purpose:This question is thought by myself. I just want the students not only to find the answers from the surface of the reading materials, but also think it deeply so that they can understand it thoroughly.
(4)Do you think the Antarctica Treaty is a good idea? Why/Why not?
(5)What might happen to Antarctica if there wasn't an international treaty to protect it?
These two questions emphasize the importance of the Antarctica Treaty, and it is a symbol to men’s efforts to work together for the progress and peace.
Step 4: Words and sentences
This step is language learning part. The students will practice some words and sentence pattern so that they can talk about the topic with them.
Step5:Consolidation
Step 6: Group work& Presentation:
I will give them three topics for them to discuss
1.If you have an opportunity, would you like to go to Antarctica? Why?
2.What should we do to the last continent”:Antarctica? You can draw a picture or make a brochure to call on the public to protect it.
3.Imagine the theme of 2019 World Environment Day.
My opinion is that they can choose any topic as they like so that they can talk more about it.
