Steps:
Step 1 New vocabulary
The Ss read the new words together. The T corrects their pronunciation if necessary.
The T shows the Ss the possible new words on the screen. The Ss add them to the vocabulary list and pronounce them.
Step 2 Prediction (Activity 1 on P53)
Step 3 Fast reading
T：How can we get the main idea of one passage?
SS: By finding the topic sentences.
T: By finding the topic sentences , dividing the passage into several parts, analyzing the structure of the passage or drawing the mind-map.
The Ss find the topic sentences. Some Ss read out the topic sentences before the whole class.
The SS finish Activity 2.
T: How many parts can you divide it into? Discuss in groups and draw the mind-maps.
Step 4 Careful reading
The Ss continue finishing their mind-maps for expressions examples. Four Ss list the examples on the Bb.
The T check their mind-maps with the whole class and make sure they understand the meanings of the English expressions.
The T present the related background to the Ss.
The SS finish Activity 5 and Activity 4.
Step 5 More interesting expressions
The T shows some English expressions to the Ss in English first and other expressions in Chinese. The Ss have a translation.
