Students’ Analysis: Sometimes our scores for the Cloze Test are not very satisfactory, partly because we can’t make the most of the information given in it. Therefore we need to learn the strategies for success on the Cloze Test.

Teaching Procedures:

Step I Introduction (2’)

Hello, boys and girls! Let’s begin class. Today we are going to talk about How to Improve the Cloze Test. As everybody knows, the Cloze Test accounts for (makes up) 40 points in our College Entrance Examination. In that case, it makes a big difference if we get good scores on the Cloze Test. This is why I’d like to practice it together with you. (BLACKBOARD)

Step II Thorough Learning (36’)

Learning Guide (5’)

First of all, let’s look at our Study Guide. I know that most of you did a good job, especially ，but there are still a couple of problems you all had. They are No. 36 、40 in Part One, No. 18、30、41、60、61 in Part Two, No. 40、41 in Part Three, No. 37、43 in Part Four, No.19、52 in Part Five and No. 12 in Part Six. Now it’s time for our group discussion. We have two things to do. First we have to check over our and our partners’ answers, resolve any misunderstanding between you and your partners and then write down the correct answers onto the blackboard. The second is to focus on what we find difficult to understand. Group One will deal with Part One; Group Two will be in charge of Part Two…… I’d like you to finish the task in 3 minutes.

Further Study with the help of Video Watching (15’)

Well, although we already know the correct answers to the Cloze Test, this is just the beginning of our studies. Next, I will show you a short video and help you know how to succeed on the Cloze Test for the Context. After watching the video, we’ll have our group discussion again and try to think of effective ways for the other 5 types of Cloze Test.

OK, it’s time for our group work. Group Two, could you talk about Part Two? We have only 2 minutes for discussion…… As for Group One, I have a different task for you. Time is up. We want to listen to your advice and your strategies for success on the Cloze Test. Each group will have one and a half minutes.

Step III Assessment (10’)

So, this time I have a test for you. I want to know if we can put these strategies to practice. How about completing it in 7 minutes…….OK, where is Group One? Boys and girls, there are 2 minutes left before class ends. We have two things to do. No.1, I’d like to go over what we learned this period. (PPT) Since there 6 types of Cloze Test, let’s think of different strategies to deal with them. No. 2, for today’s homework, I’d like you to read aloud the passages at least three times and have a better understanding of the strategies needed for the Cloze Test. In addition, we should complete the Cloze Test on P36, Workbook. Don’t forget our everyday Reflection. How about reading it aloud together?
