Teaching difficult points 教学难点 Help the students know the similarities and differences between the story and the play.

Teaching process

Step1.Leading in

Have you ever heard of Pygmalion? If you type in the word and search it online, you will get a Greek Story. The story goes like this:

A king called Pygmalion spends much time carving a stone statue of a beautiful woman. He falls in love with the statue and goes to the Greek Goddess to ask her to bring the statue to life. The Greek Goddess agrees to help and the statue is changed into a real woman. The two marry and live happily together.

This is the Greek myth .Shaw’s most famous play Pygmalion is based on this myth.

Step2 .Now ,read part 1 and find the answers to the following questions:

Find out the main characters in the play.

What is Eliza like and what does she do before meeting Higgins?

What is the bet between Higgins and Pickering?

How does Higgins treat Elizer?

What kind of person does Elisa become?

What’s the ending of the story?

Step3 .Retell the whole story and tell the similarities between the Greek myth and the play.

Step4 .Discussion: What is the connection between one’s speech and social position?

Step5 .Eliza would love to make changes in her life,so she goes to Higgins’ house and wants him to be her teacher. Read part2 and answer the 2 questions :

Do you think Mrs. Pearce is a friend or a servant of Higgins? Say why?

Choose the objectives in the list which best describe each character in the play. Place them in the right box.

Step6 .Enjoy the video and watch closely each character’s speech then, let’s do the imitation.

Step7 .Create a different ending.

Do you think Eliza should marry the young man?Do you think Eliza should marry Higgins ?Or neither?

Step8 .Discussion: Both the Greek myth and the play Pygmalion have one thing in common. High expectations can lead to an increase in performance.Scientists call it Pygmalion Effect.Do you get some inspiration from Pygmalion Effect.

Step9.Homework

1. To write a passage trying to retell the play—Pygmalion.

2. To change part2 into a story.
