Analysis of the students’ need

My teaching subjects are students from Senior 3 in GaoXin NO.1 School. Writing is still a hard nut for them to crack. Although they have grasped some sentence patterns and studied all the grammar points, they have difficulty in using them in a more fluent and native way. So it is necessary to instruct them in this aspect.

Analysis of the teaching material

According to the students’ weakness and need, I chose the reading passage—Drawing the line, which is cut out of the 26th Issue of Teens (Senior 3) 21st Century Newspaper. This passage is originally written by a foreigner so that it contains enough natural and native expressions which are helpful for students to improve their writing skills. Besides, the information which shows the students how to get rid of an addiction in life presented in the passage is worth reading.

Teaching objectives

Reading skills

Stduents read the passage quickly to guess the meaning of the title.

Students are guided to grasp the main idea of certain paragraphs and some detailed information so that they can improve their skills of scanning.

Writing skills

Students acquire the following beautiful expressions while reading.

What bothers me most is…

Before I know it,…

There is nothing wrong with…

Why did I feel bad about…

Doing …makes me feel…

It (also) works to do…

Students learn how to make an outline for a writing task.

Students should be aware of what to pay special attention to before writing a passage.

Emotional objectives

As senior high school students, they must be under great pressure. So another aim of this lesson is to help relieve the students’ mental stress and encourage them to roll up their sleeves and work harder.
